Snail farming is a big business in Agriculture; it is capital intensive and highly lucrative. Over 460,000 metric tons of snails is sold globally with an estimated value of eleven billion US dollars, and a liter of slime from Helix aspersa (the compound snail specie) is worth about a hundred euros at the European market or eighty-six pounds Sterling in Great Britain.
As a way of facilitating the snail market in Nigeria and Africa and creating wealth and wider economic opportunities for individuals and organizations in the continent who are willing to invest in the snail business, FarmKonnect Agribusiness Nigeria Limited, in partnership with and under the tutelage of Touchstone Snails Technology Limited, Lanarca, Cyprus, is currently developing Africa’s largest snail facility named Igbeja Snail Village — a self-sustaining snail facility strategically located in Okemesi, Ekiti state, Nigeria. The first phase of the project will house a hundred units of snail breeding facility and will produce a minimum of 2.6 Million kg (2,600 Metric tons) of snails per annum, with a very high return on investment above fifty percent per annum, from the first year of production.
The facility is built with state-of-the-heart technology, each pack of the snail facility featuring surveillance camera, electric net, sophisticated water filtration system etc. The entire facility comprises a hundred breeding units, and a unit consists of sixteen packs. Interested investors can sponsor the operation of a minimum of a snail pack at 1.5 Million per pack with a return on investment of eight hundred thousand Naira per cycle (every twelve months) for two years, and a comprehensive insurance cover on the investment.
The Igbeja project has standby off-takers, and all snails produced are currently for the export market. However, there is future consideration towards local processing for slime, meat and caviar. More so, the project is not limited to snail farming and marketing as it encompasses a touch of tourism and aims to be a world-class hospitality center, thus, it will promote touristic attraction in the host community, adding value to the nation’s economic capacity.
